The rising popularity of CBD is not without its benefits. The small studies available give us insight into how CBD impacts sleep, anxiety, and migraines.
It may be decades before all countries in the world finally legalize their consumption. But while we wait for this to happen, we can learn what to gain from it. In this article, we will show you the results of the CBD clinical study on sleep, anxiety and patients suffering from migraines.
What is insomnia?
Do you find it quite difficult to sleep? Or do you just wake up a few hours after you close your eyes? If so, you probably have insomnia.
Insomnia is a disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep and sleep. Most patients often resort to sleeping pills before they can sleep. Another symptom is fatigue and temporary pain after waking up.
How does CBD affect your sleep?
Studies have shown that there is a correlation between CBD and sleep improvement.
One of the studies was conducted by the journal Medicine, which targeted 490 patients with insomnia. Thus, it has been shown that CBD has a significant effect on sleep.
Patients rated their symptoms of insomnia on a scale of 1 to 10. On average, participants’ symptoms were 6.6.
They were treated with cannabis flower with a maximum CBD concentration of 30%. After treatment, the average rating of insomnia dropped to 2.2, a decrease of more than 33% in symptoms.
The result proved that CBD can improve sleep. However, because the study was conducted with cannabis that contains several cannabinoids, including THC, it is wrong to say that only CBD alone has improved sleep.
Much later, another study was done, which involved a 10-year-old girl suffering from sleep disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. During CBD treatment, he was given 25 mg of a CBD supplement at night
On that day, he was given another 12 mg of the supplement. In 5 months, her sleep improved enormously.
CBD oil appears to work by interacting with a network of receptors, proteins and other chemicals in the brain and peripheral tissue. This network is involved in many internal systems and plays a role in things like anxiety and sleep-wake cycles.
So, in terms of functioning as a specific sleep-promoting agent, there is evidence that CBD could involve physiological actions that are inherent in achieving a healthy and quality night’s sleep.
Speaking of anxiety, we know that this is one of the most common causes of insomnia and lack of sleep. In fact, the American Anxiety and Depression Association (ADAA) assumes that anxiety disorders are a routine cause of sleep disorders and disorders – including those that can lead to insomnia.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is your body’s response to fear and stress. It is a feeling of uncertainty often accompanied by panic. It’s a normal feeling that everyone experiences at some point.
However, there are extreme cases of anxiety that can last for weeks and months, leading to other health challenges, such as high blood pressure. When anxiety reaches this level, it is known as anxiety disorder
It means that you are always afraid of something or someone, leading to panic attacks and violence in rare cases. It can even prevent you from getting into an elevator or entering your room alone, for fear of the unknown.
If left untreated, it can lead to very severe mental disorders. Anxiety does not respect a certain age, because it can affect children, adolescents and adults alike. Common symptoms include increased heart rate, insomnia, restlessness and rapid breathing.
How does CBD work in anxiety states?
As with sleep disorders, CBD research is quite limited. However, several studies have been conducted to determine the relevance of CBD oil for the treatment of anxiety.
An experiment was published in the Permanent Journal, involving 72 people suffering from sleep and anxiety. All 72 participants underwent sleep and anxiety assessments at the beginning of the study. They were also evaluated after the first month.
Each was given 25% CBD content in capsule form. Those whose cases were predominantly sleep disorders took it at night, while people suffering mainly from anxiety were given an equal dose of CBD during the day.
After the first month, sleep disorder improved by 66%, while in people suffering from anxiety the results improved by 77%.
What is migraine?
Migraine is a severe headache that comes with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea and increased sensitivity to light. It is so awful that its excruciating effects can last between 4 hours and 72 hours.
According to the American Migraine Foundation, 36 million Americans suffer from this headache. However, it is three times more common in women than in men.
This condition is quite complicated because it is difficult to say exactly what triggers it. The cause varies from person to person. For some people, it could be caused by emotional imbalance.
For many others it is caused by their gene, while other possible causes include: preexisting medical conditions and / or excessive noise. However, as with anxiety and sleep disorders, a lot of people have taken CBD oil for migraines.
CBD and depression
Depression is usually caused by a mixture of recent events and other longer-term or individual variables. The main reasons may come from life events, personal factors or changes in the brain. Moreover, according to the American Psychiatric Association, there are several risk factors that may play a role in the onset of depression (1):
- Biochemistry
- Genetics
- Personality
- Environmental factors
Researchers believe that the potential benefits of CBD in depression are related to its positive effects on serotonin receptors in the brain.
Low serotonin levels are linked to depression. CBD does not stimulate serotonin levels, but it can affect how the brain’s chemical receptors respond to existing serotonin in the body.
A study done on animals in 2014 showed that CBD has an effect on these receptors in the brain, being antidepressant and anxiolytic.
HOW CAN IT COMPARE WITH ANTIDEPRESSANT DRUGS?
CBD seems to have benefits over antidepressant drugs when it comes to treating depression. Most antidepressants take a week to take effect. However, a 2019 animal study showed that CBD has a rapid antidepressant effect.
CBD has fewer side effects than antidepressants. Insomnia, sexual dysfunction, mood swings and agitation are the most common side effects of antidepressants. CBD did not show similar effects.
Although CBD can provide benefits in parallel with the administration of antidepressants, it is not a substitute. Do not stop taking prescribed medicines, especially antidepressants, without consulting your healthcare provider.
