CBD - Did You Know That?

Can I give CBD to my pet?

The effects of CBD for dogs

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a type of chemical found naturally in cannabis. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is nonpsychoactive, which means it will not “break you”.

Many studies and anecdotal evidence have found that it can be helpful in relieving conditions such as anxiety, pain, cancer and arthritis. Pet CBD products are marketed as a natural way to treat these conditions in dogs, which makes pet owners curious about this product. This article will cover current research on the use of CBD in dogs. , as well as possible risks and benefits to help you be as informed as possible about the use of cannabidiol in animals.

What is the attitude of veterinarians towards CBD?

A recent survey of 2,131 participants by the VIN News Service found that 63% of veterinarians reported being asked about pet CBD oil at least once a month.

For now, don’t expect your veterinarian to recommend CBD products to you, and certainly don’t expect a prescription.

Even in areas where medical cannabis is legal, existing laws only allow a human health care provider to prescribe cannabis to people. It does not authorize veterinarians to administer, release, prescribe or recommend such products for use in animal patients.

Uses of CBD in dogs

Research on CBD and humans has shown that it can be effective in treating epilepsy, anxiety, irritable bowel disease (IBD) and chronic pain.

A 2018 study sought to evaluate the safety, anti-inflammatory and anti-pain properties of a CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis. The researchers gave the dogs doses of 2 or 8 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight.

Eighty percent of dogs showed an improvement in their pain and mobility, as measured by two veterinary resources – the short canine pain inventory and the Hudson activity scale. However, it is important to note that this study was funded by a CBD manufacturer, so the results may be biased.

A small study published in 2019 found that epileptic dogs who received CBD in addition to seizure medications had significantly fewer symptoms than those who received seizure medication and a placebo.

However, a similar number of dogs in both the CBD and placebo groups responded to treatment and had decreases in seizure activity. The authors recommended further testing before reaching definitive conclusions.

Ways to administer CBD to dogs

CBD pet oil comes in many forms, such as food, oils and creams. But research into the effectiveness of each method is quite limited.

A 2018 Colorado State University study of dogs with epilepsy found that oral CBD oil was more effective than a capsule, cream or gel.

How much CBD can be given to dogs

The 2018 study conducted on dogs with osteoarthritis showed that the most effective dose to increase the level of comfort and activity of dogs was 2 mg per kg of weight.

Each dog will respond differently to this supplement, which is why it is important to start with a low dose, monitor your pet’s results, and make the necessary changes. Most products will offer dosing suggestions, but keep in mind that they are developed by the manufacturer.

How to choose a product

There is a great variability of products on the market, which means that some CBD products for humans and pets are more effective than others.

A good rule of thumb when choosing CBD products is to look for “certificates of analysis” and other evidence of third-party testing on the product’s website.

We also recommend that you consider whether a product contains THC in addition to CBD. Currently, there is even less research on the effects of THC in dogs than on the effects of CBD.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) mentions THC as a toxic substance for dogs and cats. Although the lethal dose of THC is greater than 3 grams per kg, adverse effects may occur.

Be sure to research each brand before you buy and consult a veterinarian about the side effects and possible toxicities that these products may cause your pet.

How does CBD affect dogs?

If you give CBD to your dog, watch for signs of a positive or negative reaction.

If your dog’s arthritis has caused mobility problems, and after about a week of CBD they are able to run and jump as before, there is a good chance that it has worked.

Regarding the negative effects, beware of excessive gasping, lethargy, vomiting and loss of balance. If your pet has any of these symptoms, it may have consumed too much and have toxic effects.

In this case, it is best to visit your veterinarian. They will be able to help you whether they are willing to discuss CBD with you or not.
